The Ill Effects of Negative Emotions

The surprising truth about the body and mind is the fact that they are in fact interconnected. There are a number of books and blog posts which say that the body and the mind are separate entities. This is not true. There is scientific proof showing that both these are parts of the same person, and that there is a deep-seeded mechanism that interlocks one with the other.

When your body responds to external stimuli, your mind will compliment it by thinking along the same lines as your feelings. The importance of this process is highlighted by the fact that the way we perceive things is simply a cognitive activity, which gets triggered by how we sense our surroundings through our sensory organs.

The reverse is also true. If you are upset about something, it will show on your face. Your mind experiences emotions at light speed. However, your body takes about a fifth of a second to respond to the feelings in your mind. This means that in this fraction of a second, you actually have a neuro-muscular reaction which cannot be hidden.

When your emotion lasts for a long time, your bodily reaction will also start becoming more permanent. This is called your ‘affect’. The affect is something like a climate, if your immediate feelings are compared to the weather.

If you are in a bad mood for a very long time, it is not just your expression that will change, but your body will start reacting negatively even in other ways. Your immunity may go down and your digestion is likely to become poor. If you have a lot of positive energy, your body will show it too.
